The race in on to reduce our global carbon emissions. But in order to reduce our carbon footprint we must begin to rely more on renewable alternative energy sources. What better way then to start at home with a do it yourself alternative energy project?

Not all alternative energy sources are renewable. The resources that come from the sun, wind, earth, animal waste, and the landfills (this is methane gas) are all renewable and in abundance. These are looked upon as “free” energy. None are oil or hydrocarbon based and therefore they have lower carbon emissions.

It just makes sense to conserve energy. When we do this we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also saving ourselves money. When we turn the dishwasher off when it is done cleaning the dishes and allow dishes to air dry or hang our clean clothes outside on a line to dry we are contributing to the reduction of our personal carbon footprint. Changing out incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent in and of itself will save up to 75% in power for lighting. Energy efficiency in the home is a start if we are to move towards a lesser reliance on nonrenewable energy. This in turn will benefit the natural health of our planet and our pocketbooks. Our lack of responsibility and pollution is more prominent now than ever before. We as a society can offset the damage by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and becoming more conscious of our energy uses. When we buy locally grown food or grow our own, use water wisely, and recycle we continue daily in the reduction of our carbon emissions. Thus getting closer to achieving our goal of using alternative energy resources.

Solar power is a renewable alternative energy source that works by taking energy from the sun. This energy is collected by solar panels which are usually mounted on the roof and passed to an inverter which then converts this energy into electricity. These systems not only save money, help the environment, but also increase your property value.

A net meter is used in the place of your electric meter box. This meter will help keep track of the solar power that you produce and also how much electricity you actually use. You only get charged for what you use and depending on the size of your solar power unit you can actually earn credits and therefore make the meter spin backwards! How cool is that?!
