I want to be a supporter for the alternative energy movement but not sure where to start. There are a few sites I came across myself but instead they use the subject to promote political means. Is there a site or book or something that can give me the facts as a beginner?

What are some good podcasts, YouTube channels, twitter/Facebook pages and other medusa? I want to be as immersed and informed as possible. Local resources where I live are a joke, which is why I ask for those above. Thanks

really the best thing you could do is take an environmental science class at a junior college. dont take anything specific, such as strictly renewable energy sources and derivatives.

but my local community college has a green living course which teaches you things about water conservation etc.

what would you like to learn? i took an advanced environmental science class and it was more about things such as how harmful mining is and carbon emissions etc.

one fact i still remember from that class is, if we all started converting to living 100% green it would take 70 years for everyone to be green and for it to take full effect.

but yeah id recommend taking a college course or something of the sort instead of relying on online information as it is backed up with sources. glad to see someone wanting to look into it though.

really the best thing we can do for the environment is educate the people that are unaware of the harm they are doing to the environment, you dont have to become a hippy, but become aware of what you are doing

And speculation that it would likely hit 0 per barrel only served to exacerbate the situation.

As if the effect of the roller coaster price of oil was not enough, the world had to contend with the US sub-prime mortgage crisis. It is said that when the US sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold. How true. Just like how oil is the predominant fuel of the world, the US economy is the most influential economy in the world and the US dollar is the most highly accepted currency in the world. Therefore, when the US suffers, the rest of the world suffers along with it.

The skyrocketing price of oil last year triggered a domino effect on the prices of just about everything else, from the cost of transportation to the prices of essentials like utilities. Thus many people have had to tighten their belts, cut costs and try to earn some extra income. That led many to cut down expenses on their electricity bills through finding alternative energy sources.

The good news is that it is now possible to use alternative energy sources quite cheaply. The 2 most practical sources of renewable energy are the sun and the wind. You can turn your home into an alternative energy home that uses solar and wind energy to power your appliances and thus reduce your electricity costs.

With solar energy, the process basically involves using solar cells to change the energy of sunlight into electricity whereas with wind energy, you will use a wind rotor to generate electricity through a motor. The electricity from both these sources is then channeled into a battery that stores it for later use. Through a battery, you would have a constant source of electricity that is not dependent upon whether the sun is shining or the wind blowing. The battery’s electricity is in the form of DC current, so before connecting to your home appliance, you need an inverter to convert the DC current into AC.

Solar cells can be bought relatively cheaply from places like eBay that sells factory seconds or blemished cells which are just as good in generating electricity. The solar cells need to be wired together in series in a solar panel like how batteries are arranged in a flashlight. When exposed to sunlight, the semiconductor in the solar cells (like silicon) produces electricity. Then they are connected to a battery as mentioned above.

Many people supplement the electricity they generate from solar energy with electricity that comes from wind power. You can either buy or make your own wind turbine blades and connect them to a motor to get electricity. Once again, eBay is a good source for both wind turbine blades and motors. Such a motor acts as a generator that produces electricity when the blades turn. This electricity is also stored in a battery.

Alternative home energy solutions is the answer to save on our electricity bill.

I know if the government really put every resource they had into alternative energy, it would become possible to commercialize this industry in as little as 10 years. But 2 decades of war in the Middle East have not encouraged this move, neither have terrorist attacks. Greenland already is moving away from oil as its primary source of energy, why can’t we? We have scientists and MBA’s that are just as brilliant. The only good news I’ve heard is that somewhere in the Midwest, I think it’s Colorado, the state returns some money to homes which use wind-powered energy instead of the traditional forms of energy (oil or electricity). Tax breaks on electric cars are not enough, because I haven’t seen that big of a change in our energy resources yet.

Let’s take a look at a few of the more common choices.

1. Solar Power

Everything on the planet runs on the energy provided by our sun. The oil your car runs on is nothing more than stored solar energy, when you get right down to it. So the move to solar power just makes sense. Solar power can be used in a few different ways. It is possible to run a home directly off of your solar panels, and rely on the power company to provide electricity when the sun is down or on cloudy days. When your solar panels are operating, you feed any energy you are not using at the moment back through your meter into the power grid. This can help smooth out the available alternative energy levels available, and lead to more power being sold to the power company.

3. Hydroelectric Power

Most people would probably not think of hydroelectric power as a viable source of alternative energy for their home, but if you have access to a source of running water like a creek, you can generate a surprisingly large amount of power with only a small dam. When used either in conjunction with solar and wind, or on its own, hydroelectric power can easily completely replace the power company as the source of power in a home.

Energy consultants and analysts are insistent that cheap oil has “peaked” or is very soon going to peak. What this means for us is an expensive future-unless we can find new sources of powering our mechanized and electronic civilization, new sources which are alternatives to oil.

We must also switch to alternative forms of energy because our present forms are too damaging to the atmosphere. While this write does not believe that the global warming trend is much, if at all, sustained by the activities of mankind (in short, it’s a natural cycle and there’s nothing we can do about it except prepare for the effects of it), we certainly do contribute at present to the destruction of the environment and to things like air pollution with our energy sources as they are. Coal is another source of energy that we need to wean ourselves off of-again, it is finite, and it is filthy, and the mining of it is dangerous and environmentally disruptive. We can also explore new, streamlined methods for producing electricity that we presently generate so much of via hydro-power so that we are less disruptive of the environment when we have need of constructing things such as large dams.
