Ineed to build a water wheel for an irrigation project, where can I find plans for them?
I want the type of wheel that picks up the water and dumps it into a trough, not the kind that is used for power transmission.
Try talking to an ancient Egyptian.
What was life like for an individual before the water wheel or windmill was invented ?
What was life like for an individual before the innovation of the Water Wheel or Windmill? Pre-Renaissance preferably.
I think you are asking about the time before energy was extracted from the physical environment.
Before that time work was mostly performed by animals, particularly including humans. On the industrial scale for mining, smelting, grinding of wheat etc and public works this tends to have involved slaves, that is unpaid labour, usually prisoners or a sub class. In agriculture animals were more common, partly because it is impractical to plough with human power. There tended to be a working class of serfs (bonded labour).
Generally speaking there was a need for more physical work in the community, hard labour. The shortage of this labour is what led to wars or incursions for capture of slaves, and more harsh treatment of individuals, with classes designed to provide that labour. Considering the earlier uses of these power sources:
Driving bellows for metal refinery.
Pumping water for irrigation (mostly from rivers).
Grinding grains for flour, removing husks etc.
Other grinding tasks to make paint, pigments, powders.
These are all labour intensive tasks, important to the community, and these machines must have contributed to social change, however slowly.
There have been water driven pumps into ancient times, as in ancient Egypt, China, Rome and the Middle East at least. These go back to several hundred years BC at least. See first link.
Windmills appear to have been around from Persia in 500-700AD, but the first recorded British ones are in 12th century. (Second and third links). A variation of wind power use is sails on sailing ships, which go much further back, perhaps around the time of the wheel’s use in Mesopotamia..
Waterwheels are recorded in ancient Rome a little over 2000 years ago. It is thought they may not have been popular in Rome because “slave labour was cheaper”.
What type of gearing should I use on a water wheel?
I want to hook the water wheel to a generator so I want to know what type of gearing I should use to get the best speed to power the generator.
Water Wheel is 2 meters in diameter
The water wheel will rotate very slowly, so you will need to gear it up a great deal. A two-meter water wheel will probably rotate once every 2-4 seconds. Let’s say three seconds. If you use a car alternator for your generator, you’ll want to get the alternator’s RPMs up to at least 1,000. That means you’ll need gearing on the order of 3,000:1
If you use an AC generator, it will want to turn at a number that is evenly divided by 60 or 50, depending on where you live. (It’s 60 in the US.) That means you want a generator speed of 1,200, 2,400 or (ideally) 3,600 RPM. Multiply three times the final speed to get the gear ratio. For example, to get 3,600 RPM, you need gearing of 10,800:1.
I’ve always wanted to do this… Have fun!
bom for hqg, is January bom the star or the water wheel? which one do I bring tonight to the meeting?
I became a member in november, the first meeting I attended I thought I seen the star (jo’s vacation star) given away as a door prize. so I am wondering if you are one month ahead and I make february’s bom (the water wheel) for tonight meeting?
I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you are asking.
how does a water wheel rotates or works?
please. help me. i need to have the complete information about how a water wheel or mill works?
Google is your friend!
if we connect two motors to a water wheel will that create more electricity?
for a science project me and my partner are thinking of making a water wheel to create electricity but if we connect two motors to it will it create more electricity?
You must get things straight. You create electricity through generators not motors.
The water wheel has an upper limit capacity and if the first generator was near or up to that limit, then it would be no use adding more generators.
how do u make a bamboo water wheel?
u know the thing u see on the movie cast away that wheel thing that is used to make water run in swiss family robsoin
