Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

James Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

James asks…

Should I run a diesel truck off Vegtable Oil or off Biodiesel?

From what I understand you don’t need to change anything with your veichle when running biodiesel, but you need to make some conversions for vegtable oil. However, from what I’ve read it’s not that much less expensive to make your own biodiesel as it is to just buy regular diesel fuel. So what should I go with? I would love to really talk to someone who has done this kind of thing on their own and has hands on experience. Thanks!

admin answers:

If you dont want the hassel of making the fuel yourself, then just go with biodiesel wherever you find it. The veggie oil is of course much cheaper but is very hands on. You first have to find a supplier that will let you have their oil before putting it in the outdoor receptacles behind their business. Once in there it becomes the property of the oil disposal company and they will prosecute you for taking their product. Then you have to get it home and go through a detailed process of filtering until the oil is as clean as possible. You will need to add a secondary tank and fule line along with a purge pump to power your truck and then clear the fuel lines upon your ending of the driving daily. Not to mention, that you can be forced to pay road taxes on the gallons you burn if you are ever caught y your state. As you can see, it is very complicated. Just decide how determined you are to drive cheap.

Thomas Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

Thomas asks…

Convert Toyota Camry to run on Biodiesel?

Is it possible to convert a toyota camry so that the engine will run on biodiesel? Yes, no, maybe? If so, how complicated will it be? Approximately how much time and money will it cost to make this conversion?
Will it even be worthwhile to do this?

admin answers:

Gas engines cannot be converted to run on diesel. Diesels have about 2x the compression ratio requiring stronger connecting rods, heftier crank and rod bearings, new fuel injection and distribution system and timing mechanism to inject the fuel at the right time (much different timing that fuel injected gas engines), different fuel pump with higher pressure. You could inject the fuel into the former spark plug holes but you would not get the proper burn pattern at the ignition point. It would be cheaper to buy a car with the diesel engine and related components already installed. Only if you have more money that you know what to do with would it be feasible. It’s cheaper to build a car for diesel operation than it is to convert a car for diesel operation.

Richard Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

Richard asks…

i have a 1995 hiace mini bus do i have to make special conversions to run biodiesel and will it work well?

i live in the tropics Jamaica wil it work for me

admin answers:

Check if the rubber installed by the Toyota factory in the diesel fuel system is compatible with the properties of biodiesel. Natural rubber and Buna rubber will absorb the biodiesel and wick it to the surface. These rubbers will quickly soften and lose integrity.
Synthetic rubbers can be made with various compounds. Select replacement hoses which are both diesel and alcohol resistant to prolong their life. Viton is a good choice as it also is heat resistant, good for use near the engine.
Finally, be confident in the supplier of your biodiesel to produce a high quality consistent product. You’d not likely buy petroleum diesel from the guy with an oil well sunk in his back garden, you should similarly purchase an alternative fuel with the same quality concerns.
The advantage of biodiesel is that the plant oil has been converted to a diesel fuel. It is not necessary to convert the vehicle. As pointed out, the biodiesel mixes freely and completely in any ratio with petroleum diesel if that is desired.
The use of unconverted plant oil requires modification or conversion of the vehicle.

Donald Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

Donald asks…

how difficult is it to make biodiesel at home?

i have been doing some research on it and i’m considering buying an older mercedes. from what i understand the only conversion it really requires is new fuel lines but my main concern is how realistic it is for me to make it in my garage with used vegetable oil from a restaurant.
what is the main difference between biodiesel and wvo? i’m confused.

admin answers:

Latest research shows that biodiesel is far more polluting than normal diesel. This is because whilst it produces less carbon it produces far more NOX which acts as a catalyst in the atmosphere to produce far more destructive gasses!!

The European Union made a directive making it compulsory to use a percentage of bio fuel a few year ago. They are now so concerned they are actually looking at reversing that decision!!!

Maria Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

Maria asks…

Can I run B20 BioDiesel in my 1984 Mercedes 300d without any conversions?

admin answers:

You should be able to as its only really new cars that have a problem as far as I know.

I personally use a higher mix in my car and it works fine. Just make sure the biodiesel is filtered before you put it in your tank.

Charles Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

Charles asks…

can diesel engines use biodiesel?

I heard you have to replace some rubber parts or something that deteriorates from the biodiesel, and the conversion process isn’t as expensive as companies make it.. I thoughtthe conversion was a bit more intensive but I may be misinformed.
Anyone?
thanks

admin answers:

Diesel engines are the ONLY automotive engines that can use bio-diesel. Any diesel engine can burn bio-diesel without modification. Just pour it into the fuel tank and it will mix with the diesel fuel. Use a mix ratio between 5 and 20% bio-diesel to diesel fuel. It is true that when you start using bio-diesel you will need to replace the fuel filter more often. I personally never had that problem until I started using 100% bio-diesel in my mercedes. Also there probably wont be a problem with the fuel lines while using a B5-B20 mix.
A common mistake I see often is people calling waste vegetable oil (WVO) bio-diesel. Biodiesel is WVO that has been processed to remove the glycerin and cleaned and filtered. It is used as mentioned above. To use WVO as a fuel the vehicle needs to be converted by adding an extra fuel tank, lines, switches and heaters. The WVO is poured into the second tank and the engine is startred and warmed up on diesel. Then the switch can be made to burn the WVO. Before the engine can be shut down, you must switch back to diesel fuel to purge the WVO from the fuel lines so the engine will start the next time>

Daniel Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

Daniel asks…

Looking for a good service mechanic in Melbourne, Victoria, for a 1983 Mercedes Benz Diesel.?

I live in Melbourne and own a 1983 Mercedes Benz 300D (Diesel) in nice condition. I wonder if someone could recommend a good, honest, and reasonably priced local mechanic, for regular servicing and repairs. While the car is of a vintage not to have any specialist MB electronics, it would obviously be good to find a mechanic with some experience (and fondness) around older Mercedes and/or Diesel cars (and/or possible Biodiesel conversions). Preferably inner Melbourne or eastern suburbs. Your recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

admin answers:

Use the telephone to call around, and ask about prices for routine service work. You know, oil changes, brake work, etc, and see how they react when you tell them what vehicle you’ve got. Also, talk to some other Benz owners in your area,,,,,,,someone knows where a good shop is located, you just have to talk to enough peole to find it!

Sandy Your Questions About Biodiesel Conversion

Sandy asks…

Is making high-quality “Biodiesel” from Expired and/or Recycled Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) a potentially …..?

… viable business proposition for developing nations?

Assuming you:

1- can get the Expired or WVO at no or very low cost (i.e. transportation / recycle collection expenses)

2- have access to an affordable labor force

3- mean to produce it on a reasonably large scale to sustain a relatively large size business and NOT just for personal use

4- mean to produce a high-quality Biodiesel and hope to sell the glycerin byproduct to the industry as well

5- can market the Biodiesel directly to the target customers (e.g. trucks, buses, heating market, etc.)

Would the upfront cost of a reasonably large Conversion / Reactor Facility plus the other ongoing costs of production / operation / distribution (fix and variable) make this a potentially viable business opportunity for “the developing country markets”?

And do you know of similar type operations (on large scale) anywhere in the world that you can direct my attention to?

Would greatly appreciate serious comments.

Your Questions About Hybrid Cars

Donald Your Questions About Hybrid Cars

Donald asks…

Hybrid Cars….?

Companies are making hybrid cars so we can spend less money on gas and so we don’t hurt the enviroment, right?. Well think about this, what’s the point of paying 30 grand for a hybrid car when you can have the same car (not hybrid) for probably 10 grand less?. I mean, your still going to be wasting money because the money that you don’t pay for the gas, you pay for the car. The only thing that hybrid cars don’t do is hurt the environment, but as far as your money, you will spend the same amount of money or more yearly. Anyone agree?.

admin answers:

Someone didn’t do their math, that’s all. Personally, I can’t see paying even $10,000 for something that will be virtually worthless in 10 years. And I especially can’t see paying $30,000 for something that will only be worth $19,000 the moment I drive if off the lot!

Steven Your Questions About Water Wheel Power

Steven asks…

water wheel electricity?

wat is the best way to use a water wheel to power a house, equipment-wise?

admin answers:

Farms used to use wind generator systems that charged a bank of batteries and the household appliances used the batteries for power. I would approach the problem in a similar way in that I would use an alternator or generator to charge batteries. I would then use semiconductor invertors to change the battery power to 120 Volt 60 Hz house power. The battery bank would have to be quite large, possibly using golf-cart batteries. The invertor again would have to be large. I suspect the best way to do the system would be to supply each fused (circuit breaker) line in the house with a separate inverter. I bought a 2000 watt/4000 watt peak, inverter for a little over $100. This will supply about 15 Amps at 120 volts.
You really have to think this through. I don’t know how to connect a water wheel to an alternator, although the power is available, the speed of the wheel vs. The required alternator speed is large.
Hope this helps.

Helen Your Questions About Water Wheel Power

Helen asks…

Could anyone tell me how to convert water to electricity using a water wheel?

i was wondering how i could power my home using water

admin answers:

You don’t convert water to electricity, you convert gravity to electricity.

You need ‘head’ which relates to the height of the water. You then have a hydraulic gradient between two (or more) points. It is possible you already have that gradient and pressure in which case you only need the wheel. If you don’t have the head, you may need to create it using a reservoir coupled to a race. In the race is the waterwheel.

Water wheels may be either vertical or horizontal. Efficiencies may be as high as 70% (with backshot wheels). Most powerful wheel was about 100hp but don’t expect that sort of power unless you have a lot of water available.

Carol Your Questions About Water Wheel Power

Carol asks…

What is the best fan blade design to optimize wind production with low power?

The blades must create very little friction, as the fan is going to be powered by a water wheel. It has to be made of common household objects, and must use little power. What shape and at what angle should the blades be to create the most wind?
We are making an evaporative cooler to help people who cannot afford more expensive air-conditioning. Thank you for your help.

admin answers:

There are several types of designs
kaplan

http://images.google.ca/images?gbv=2&hl=en&sa=1&q=kaplan+turbine&aq=1&oq=kaplan&start=0

Francis

http://images.google.ca/images?gbv=2&hl=en&sa=1&q=francis+turbines&aq=0&oq=francis+turbine&start=0

pelton

http://images.google.ca/images?gbv=2&hl=en&sa=1&q=pelton+turbines&btnG=Search+images&aq=f&oq=&start=0

These are water turbines, the objective is always to recuperate as much energy as possible
the same goes with the fan

the particular design depends on how much pressure, the speed of rotation, the speed of the air flow…

No simple thing!
But worth lots of fun to experiment, good engineering

in your example you may also need some transmission to convert the speed of the water turbine as it will probably not spin fast enough for the air turbine

Ken Your Questions About Water Wheel Power

Ken asks…

Were can I get a good water turbine to hook up to a water wheel?

I want to power a 1000 volt light fixture.

admin answers:

You are probably wanting to power a 1000 Watt AC fixture. There is really a lot more information that would be useful to ascertain what would be the best configuration for your set-up.

What is running the water wheel? Is it a natural flowing stream of some sort? Or is the water run from a pump? If it is a natural source of water then you might just be able to run a generater directly off of the water wheel.

There are lots of different generators, you will have to calculate RPM at the shaft requirements to find if you can attain 1000 watts of power at 125V AC. It might be simpler to do a system similar to the link below in DC.

There are all kinds of options, depending on your requirements. Sounds like a fun project… Good luck.

Problem with Chevrolet Malibu 2000?

Hi, everybody:

I will appreciate a lot some help with this problem. I have a Chevrolet Malibu 2000 car with 99,000 miles. My car has been leaking coolant since 2 months ago, and I have to pour coolant approx. every 2 to 3 weeks. I use the Koolzone coolant (green color), not the Dexcool coolant recommended by the manufacturer.
I took the car to a mechanic and he told me that some gasket (junta de la araña) was damaged. I checked with a local automobile parts store and they told me that the kit with 2 plenum gaskets and 2 juntas (gaskets) de la araña could be purchased at $ 50. I do not know if it is better on long time for my car to change the 4 gaskets or to change only the damaged gasket. What do you think?

admin answers:

I would change only the damaged gasket. Why fix something that is not broke.More expense for nothing..

Now I dont know weather or not to bridge the amp or realy what to do i have very basic knowledge of what to do i have a aftermarket deck so in your opinion how should i hook this up a diagram would be helpful

admin answers:

Definately bridge the amp, it will give u more bass. And if ur talking about starting from scratch, u gotta run the red power 8 gauge wire from ur battery or fuse box to the amp. From there u must connect the black 8 gauge grounding wire to a piece of raw metal on the car. What i mean by raw is that there is no paint getting int he way. Next run the RCA cords fromt he back of ur headunit (stereo) AND the amp turn on which will be a thin blue wire. Find where the amp turn on line is located in the wiring harness and attach that. Send both of those wires back to the amp and plug them in. From there just attach the positive and negative wires to the sub box and the amp and blast away.

I need Honda Accord help?

I love cars, but dont know much about engines. hopefully ill be getting a well paying job, and at 16, ill have no other expenses, My gear head friends talked me into tuner cars (out of a BMW), and i want a 94-97 model, Honda Accord. After I buy a body kit, pay for a full paint job, and a sound system, i want to work in the engine. but before all this can come true (crossing my fingers it all works out) i need to know what kind of base accord i want. i think i want a 5 speed manual, but what kind of engine do i want? my friend said a 2.2L vtec, but why exactly? whats the difference in power between that and an SOHC? Ive looked on Andysautosport.com, and found some cool body kits on there, and tirerack.com and found some cool looking rims, but i have no idea on whats good. Whats a good manufacturer of body kits and fascias? and of 18″ wheels? and sound systems?

Thanks alot for the help.

Engine; H22a DOHC VTEC has around 200hp. Very Reliable, Speed, Expensive parts, Potential to get stolen!
Engine; F22a SOHC VTEC has around 140hp. Very Reliable, inexpensive parts. Nobody wants it.

My suggestion will be, first work on the engine. You gonna waste alot of money in body kits and paint job and sound system. UNLESS you want a show car. Then by all means, go right ahead.

Want to win a quick ten points ? Well summarize this article?

Photographs taken of Liam Johns’ crib by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office clearly show where it came apart.

The drop rail had detached from its plastic track, creating a gap through which the 9-month-old boy slipped feet-first. Instead of falling to the floor, Liam got his head stuck between the rail and the mattress. Trapped in a hanging position, the boy asphyxiated.

Liam’s April 2005 death prompted an investigation by a federal watchdog agency and a family lawsuit against the crib’s manufacturer, Simplicity Inc.

Consumers who have one of the cribs cited in the recall should contact Simplicity (888-593-9274 or simplicityforchildren.com) to obtain a repair kit with new hardware. If the crib already has the newer hardware (see attached graphic), consumers should still check the crib’s drop rail to ensure it is assembled right-side up.

But the company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission didn’t warn parents across the country about the potentially fatal flaw in Simplicity cribs–not after Liam suffocated, not after more complaints about the crib rails and not after two more infants died.

Once the Tribune began questioning the company and the agency this month, a massive recall of Simplicity cribs followed.

On Friday, the CPSC took action on 1 million cribs, including the model that the Johns family used for Liam. It is the largest recall of full-size cribs in the agency’s history.

In its Hidden Hazards series, the Tribune has documented how the understaffed and sluggish CPSC fails to protect children from dangers in toys and other products. The paper’s examination of Simplicity’s popular cribs underscores that, even in the aftermath of a child’s death, the agency can fall short in its watchdog role, leaving children vulnerable to a documented hazard.

Interviews and records show that the federal investigator assigned to Liam’s death failed to inspect the crib in his initial inquiry and didn’t track down the model or manufacturer.

“We get so many cases,” the investigator, Michael Ng, said in an interview this month. “Once I do a report, I send it in and that’s it. I go to the next case. We could spend more time, but we are under the gun. We have to move on.”

Only last week, after inquiries by the Tribune, did Ng return to California to find the crib. It had first been held as evidence by sheriff’s police and later was put in storage by a lawyer retained by the family.

Even with the recall, it remained unclear why it took so long to address the problem. The CPSC often gets bogged down in negotiations with companies over recalls because fedx eral law limits its powers and its ability to disclose details of its investigations into dangerous products.

Nancy Cowles, a child-product safety advocate and executive director of Kids In Danger, called for congressional hearings to look into the delay. “Was it because the CPSC has no power and the company was able to stall?” she asked.

When first presented with the Tribune findings this month, Julie Vallese, spokeswoman for the CPSC, said the agency could not comment about Simplicity. “We have more than one investigation open, and that’s why I can’t answer any questions,” she said.

In announcing the recall Friday, the CPSC blamed a flawed crib design and hardware that allowed parents to install the drop rails upside down, which can cause the rail to detach from the frame. The agency said it was aware of seven non-fatal cases of infants being trapped and 55 other cases of drop-rail problems.

It also linked the Simplicity cribs to three deaths but did not release the names of those children or the dates of the fatal accidents.

One of those children was Liam Johns, records show. Another was 6-month-old Edward Millwood, who died in November 2006 in Georgia. The third was 8-month-old Royale Arceneaux, who died in February in Houston. All three children fell between the mattress and a separated drop rail.

The drop rails in those deaths had been installed upside down. But the agency also found two incidents in which correctly installed drop rails failed to work properly.

Ken Waldman, president of Simplicity Inc., said in an interview Friday that the company makes safe products and works closely with the CPSC to fix any problems. He would not say why the recall did not occur earlier.

“This is the thing to do and that’s why we decided to do it now,” he said.

The Aspen 3 in 1, once Simplicity’s best-selling crib, accounted for the bulk of the recall. About 600,000 of those models, which are no longer made, were recalled.

Tires and rims change?

Greetings. I’ve been considering an upgrade for my car. Now, it produces 150 HP, with the upgrade kit it will produce 180 HP. Keep in mind though, that this kit is provided by the manufacter. It changes the, turbo, suspension, brakes and exhaust, and contains warranty under manufacturer. Currently, I have tires that are 215/45 R17, and they’re ultra high performance. Will I need to change my tires for this upgrade, or should I keep the ones that I have? Are these tires capable of handling 180 HP? Please help. Thanks.

How Does Biomass Work?

 How Does Biomass Work?

Biomass is among the renewable energy source and I s kind of biological material derived from living organisms such as wood, waste and to alcohol fuels. it is commonly a plant natter grown which will help generate electricity or it can able to produce heat. among the simple examples of biomass are the forest residues such as dead trees, yard clippings and wood chips, which can be a good source of energy. Most of the time, biomass also includes biodegradable wastes that can be burnt as fuel.

Biomass is a carbon based and is a mixture of organic molecules containing hydrogen, and which enables these substances to produce an amount of energy, that can be utilize for your daily consumption. One of the major uses of biomass is for fuel; however it has a great difference from the so called fossil fuel. it is also use for burning which can be directly use as light or heat or sometimes it can be transformed to produce electricity by boiling water, which will produce steam and spins a turbine.

Another uses of biomass energy is mulching, which is use to fertilize soil and at the same time feed plants also. nevertheless, the high-tech methods or uses of biomass energy are that it can be transformed into a more combustible material. Other methods will convert biomass into fuels which will be used daily by trucks and cars. There are certain ways where biomass can be of great help to you. you only have to be familiar to this renewable energy source so that you can fully enjoy the advantages that it can give you.

Your Questions About Biodiesel Production

Jenny Your Questions About Biodiesel Production

Jenny asks…

What do you think about the economic viability of biodiesel production and the profitability of this enterpris

I want to understand more about biodiesel potentialities in the world market to solve the looming problem of the energy crisis in today’s world. Please enlighten me furthe on this matter.

admin answers:

First writer is correct. Another consideration when looking at Bio-Fuels is not just the energy costs, but the Water costs. Here in the Midwest, Water is constantly in shortage. Corn based Ethanol from irrigated land uses 2000 gallons of water just to grow one bushel of corn. And ethanol has LESS energy than gasoline. However, Soybeans that can be made into Bio-Diesel, only need about 300gallons of water per bushel…and Bio-Diesel actually has MORE energy/gallon than straight Diesel.

We can never produce enough Bio Fuels to offset oil imports in any significant way, but they can be used effectively to ‘Stretch’ our supplies for a while untill we can come up with a suitable alternative.

There is a GREAT article about Ethanol Production in the latest issue of Car and Driver magazine. It will answer alot of your questions about Bio-Fuels in relation to the energy issues today. BTW…There is NO CRISIS!!! Just temporary price spikes due to political instability in the world today.

Lisa Your Questions About Biodiesel Production

Lisa asks…

What is a substitute for methanol in biodiesel production?

admin answers:

Running straight vegetable oil doesn’t require methanol. If you need to convert oils and triglycerides then ethanol will also do it. But ethanol is drinking alcohol so you have to deal with the tax man and such when you make or handle ethanol.

Methanol isn’t as toxic as it is made out to be, but you do need to avoid drinking, inhaling or getting it all over you.

where can I find out about european law concerned with home biodiesel production?

I need to know if it’s leagle to run my car on it in Spain

admin answers:

It appears the EU supports the use of biodiesel. If you look at the European Biodiesel Board’s website you’ll see that Spain produced significant quanities of biodiesel in 2005. Whether or not it is legal for private production is another. You should contact the EBB and ask them. You should probably also contact your local government officials.

Carol Your Questions About Biodiesel Production

Carol asks…

where can I find out about governance in european law for home biodiesel production ?

admin answers:

If you’re checking out home biodiesel production and looking to meet european standards, you could try contacting one of the current biodiesel manufacturers and asking them what european standards they are complying to.

They would also be up on any recent changes or upcoming changes that need to be met.

Not sure of current list of manufacturers but dmoz has a list of links one of which might have them ..

Is it a good time to invest money on cars?

I have a 2007 “Pony Edition” Mustang and it’s in pristine condition with only 60,000 miles. I’m thinking of investing about putting $10,000 in it. $5,000 for parts, $5,000 labor.$10,000 really isn’t much to me considering i make about $5,000 a month, so i really wouldn’t be loosing much. I live with my parents, so i have no bills to pay.

But, here, let me tell you the changes I’m going to make.
1.Change it from white, to black candy coated paint. (Me and dad will do all the prep work)
2.Put black racing rims on it
3.Duel Exhaust kit
4.Super charger kit
5.Intercooler kit
6.Music system
7.Key start engine
8.Louvered scoops on the back window and quarter windows.

Obviously, i will chrome out most parts like the lights, grill, etc.

The car has rock chips in the windshield which will be replaced, it also has a tiny mark from another car door hitting my door thats about the size of the tip of a pencil. I’m seeing these car’s go on sale for $30,000 5,000 and people are buying them!

I’m looking to make about $40,000

If i should include any parts, please let me know! Thank you!

Michael Your Questions About Kit Cars For Sale

Michael asks…

What all does a Turbo Kit replace on a car? Where can I find one for an ’01 Ford Mustang 3.8L V6?

Doesn’t it replace at least one of the headers? I was looking for a twin turbo kit and couldn’t find any for sale new, just used and custom built. I found two different turbo kits both around $4000 with 8 PSI and promising 375 to the rear. I was going to buy long tube headers but got the thought why bother if I am seriously going to install the turbo kit.

admin answers:

Turbo doesn’t replace the headers, it forces air into your intake mainfold, so the air intake its already equipped with has to come off, and don’t turbo a mustang, go for the supercharger it will have a better displacemtn, and if you need one for 4000 or less i’d use americanmuscle.com i have a 2002 mustang gt and i shop on there all the time

Your Questions About Biomass Pyramid

Robert Your Questions About Biomass Pyramid

Robert asks…

What is the advantage of using a biomass pyramid instead of using a number pyramid?

admin answers:

The pyramid of biomass gives a more accurate assessment of total energy at each trophic level since a pyramid of numbers does not take into account the size of the organisms.

Paul Your Questions About Biomass Pyramid

Paul asks…

How is energy lost in a biomass pyramid?

admin answers:

Heat energy is lost to its surroundings (around you).
Also, animals lose energy through their faeces, movement and respiration as well for example.
That’s why it’s a pyramid shape because energy is lost after each stage.
Hope that helps!

Ruth Your Questions About Biomass Pyramid

Ruth asks…

What is a pyramid of biomass, pyramid of numbers and a pyramid of energy?

i really really need the answer right now! ASAP thanks

admin answers:

This is a very general model of the balance of energy in the environment, notice how like when your looking at say a pyramid of animals and plants, the plants are always at the bottom in the largest segment? That’s because that’s where the most mass and energy is. There are more plants and auto-trophs then any other organism on earth. As you go further up these pyramids, there is less and less energy available. For example the top of these pyramids often consists of upper epsilon or apex predators, on land lions tigers and bears(oh my) and in the ocean its sharks and some species of whales. There are far fewer total organisms here and therefore far less energy and mass at these levels then compared to lower levels.
